New York Opera Fest 2017: Rimsky-Korsakov’s ‘The Golden Cockerel’ Returns To NYC For First Time Since 1971

By Francisco Salazar

New Opera NYC is gearing up to present Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Golden Cockerel” in a rare appearance in NYC.

According to the company’s official website, the famed work has not appeared on the New York City stage since 1971 when New York City Opera did it last. Interestingly enough, the opera has also always been sung in French and English. However, this new NYC production will bring the work back to its original Russian language with English subtitles.

The production will be directed by Igor Konyukhov and will be presented in three acts with one intermission and conducted by David Jackson.

The role of King Dodon will be played by international bass Mikhail Svetlov, a company principal soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow holding a reputation of exceptional acting ability and a great voice.

Russian soprano Julia Lima will sing the role of the Queen of Shemakha.

Performances of the work will run from May 18 to 21, 2017 as part of the New York Opera Fest 2017.
