New York Opera Fest 2017: Operamission Presents Bolcolm Works in ‘Behind the Mind’

By Katharine Baran

For just one night, Operamission presents William Bolcolm’s complete “Cabaret Songs” at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre on May 16 at 9:30 p.m. EST.  Countertenor Jordan Rutter will sing all 24 of Bolcolm’s and poet Arnold Weinstein’s cabaret songs, while Jennifer Peterson will play the piano.

The New York-based opera singer Jordan Rutter made his opera debut in Operamission’s 2016-2017 season when he co-curated and performed in 53rd Street Handel, a monthly series of original pastiches built upon scenes from 21 of Handel’s operas.  Then in the fall of 2016, Mr. Rutter made his off-Broadway debut at the with Origin Theatre Company, curating and performing musical intermezzi for the American premiere of Lot Vekemans’ “POISON.”

He has worked with America Opera Projects for the past year or so in creating original roles, such as Lola (“Legendary” by Joseph Rubinstein), Kyle (“Three Way” by Robert Paterson), and the title role of “Ashima” (Jing Jing Luo).  In 2017 Mr. Rutter made his debut with Nashville Opera in the world premiere full production of Paterson’s “Three Way.”  He worked with American Opera Projects for this role in 2016.

During the performance, Jennifer Peterson will play the piano to accompany Rutter.  Peterson is also a conductor and harpsichordist and is the director of Operamission.  She has done fully-staged operas, concerts, cabarets, recitals, and educational workshops to audiences since the founding of Operamission in 2009.
