New York Opera Fest 2017: Light Opera of New York – My Song Vol. 2

By Katharine Baran

This Thursday, June 8, 2017, Light Opera of New York presents “My Song Goes ‘Round the World, Volume 2.” The performance will showcase and explore composers and performers that delineated operetta on both sides of the Atlantic in the first half of the twentieth century.

The production’s music director, Matthew Stephens, received his master’s in collaborative piano from the University of North Carolina School of Arts. He was then selected for the Kenan Fellowship at the Lincoln Center Institute, where he studied aesthetic education. From there he made his New York debut at the Clark Studio Theater. Now Stephens has musically supervised over 45 theatrical performances.

Mr. Stephens has been the associate conductor for the College Light Opera Company, an assistant coach with the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute, and associate music director for the 2011 award-winning production of “Oklahoma!” that was broadcast on PBS. He has also worked on an Off-Broadway production with the West Village Music Theater Festival. Currently, he is a freelance coach and audition pianist for musical theater performers as well as opera singers and is a faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division and Montclair State University, serving as a vocal coach and studio pianist.

The performance will take place at the National Opera Center in Manhattan, beginning at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
