New York Opera Fest 2017: Apotheosis Opera Showcases Strauss’ ‘Capriccio’

By Katharine Baran

Starting on Friday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m., EDT, Apotheosis Opera presents Strauss’ “Capriccio,” with a follow-up performance on Sunday, June 18 at 3:00 p.m. EDT. The last opera by the great German composer allows the audience to get a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes in theater while positing important philosophical questions about the relationship between music and text.

The plot for this romantic comedy revolves around the Countess, an audience member, and her potential love interests between the composer and playwright.

Arkansan soprano Bonnie Frauenthal, who recently played Violetta in “La Traviata,” will play the lead role of the Countess.  She has recently worked with numerous other opera companies such as the Bronx Opera, Dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, Aspen Opera Theater, Opera in the Rock, Utopia Opera, and Main Street Opera, among others.

Meanwhile, tenor Joe Palarca will perform as Flamand.  He has recently been part of Apotheosis Opera in the company’s production of “La Fanciulla del West.”  Also in the cast is Wayne Hu as Olivier, Jay Chacon ass the count, and last but not least, Pheobe Haines as Clairon.

Mathew Jenkins Jaroszewicz is the musical director for the performance.

The performances will both be held at the El Museo Del Barrio.
