New York City Opera Announces ‘La Fanciulla del West’ Cast

By Francisco Salazar

The New York City Opera has announced the cast for “La Fanciulla del West,” which is slated to open the 2017-18 season.

Kristin Sampson returns to the company after an acclaimed run in “La Campana Sommersa” and takes on the title role in Puccini’s masterpiece. This season she will also take on the role Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, Teatro Goldoni Livorno, and Teatro Verdi in Pisa.

Jonathan Burton takes on the role of Dick Johson after an acclaimed run of “Turandot” at the Des Moines Opera. OperaWire wrote, “Special kudos to Mr. Burton, whose ringing tenor voice never failed throughout the evening. His ‘Nessun Dorma’ literally stopped the show in the last act, not because it was so familiar to the audience but because of the incredible vocal power displayed by the tenor. The final B was held for so long, with such strength and evenness of tone, my jaw literally dropped; I was left agape. His performance gave me insights into his character that were simply lost to me the last time I saw ‘Turandot.’”

Kevin Short sings Jack Rance, while Alexander Birch Elliot is Sonora. Rounding out the cast Michael Boley, Christopher Job and Kenneth Overton will perform. James Meena conducts in a new production by Ivan Stefanutti.

The production opens Sept. 6.
