New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Announces Cast For ‘Turandot’

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera’s Artistic Director, Lucine Amara, has announced the cast performing this season’s premiere of Giacomo Puccini’s last opera, “Turandot.”

Soprano Zhanna Alkhazova will make her company debut as the ice princess Turandot. The soprano has been recognized for her work as Donna Elvira in “Don Giovanni” with Geneva Opera, Leonora in “Il Trovatore” with Roman Borgman Opera, and Tamara in Rubinstein’s “The Demon” with “Commonwealth Lyric Opera.” She was the first-place winner in the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera’s 2016 Annual International Vocal Competition.

The role of Calaf will be performed by tenor Philip Alongi. The tenor has performed throughout the United States in leading roles at the Kennedy Center and the Verismo Opera.

Meanwhile, Korean-Chinese soprano Yulan Piao will make her Verismo debut after receiving first prize in the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera’s 2017 Annual International Vocal Competition and the Vienna Summer Music Festival Competition. Piao made her professional debut singing Gilda in “Rigoletto” in South Korea.

The cast will be rounded out by tenors Tai Collins, Hao Hu Bass-baritone Roland Burks, baritone Fredrick Redd, baritone Jonathan Green, and tenor Giovanni Simone.

The performance will be held on April 22, 2018 at the Bergen Performing Arts Center.
