National Sawdust and Curator Anthony Roth Costanzo Collaborate on a new Reimagined Production of “Aci Galatea e Polifemo”
By Katharine BaranNational Sawdust and Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo will come together to present an exciting new tropical version of Handel’s “Aci Galatea e Polifemo.” The performances begin on July 12, 2017, and continue on July 13, 19, and 20. Every single show kicks off at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
Costanzo will be joined in presenting this new unique version by National Sawdust (NS) and San Francisco Philharmonic Baroque Orchestra and Chorale, led by conductor Nicholas McGegan.
The production will be directed by renowned director Christopher Alden. Alden’s career has spanned decades across the world and he won an Olivier Award for his staging of Handel’s “Partenope” at English National Opera. The production was later revived at both San Fransisco Opera and Opera Australia. Alden will make his National Sawdust debut with this production.
Along with Alden’s vision and Costanzo’s charismatic performance style, composer and sound director Mark Grey will provide a creative new listening track to enhance the performance. Grey’s work has been heard around the world, at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Museum of Modern Art, to London’s Barbican and the Sydney Opera House.
Cath Brittan, who has worked with John Adams, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Cal Performances will co-produce the performance with Costanzo. Lead soprano Ambur Braid will sing aside bass-baritone Davone Tines.
