Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ To Be Shown On PBS

By Francisco Salazar

For audiences who missed Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” at the Metropolitan Opera, there is another chance on Feb. 19.

PBS will broadcast the HD performance originally shown in movie theaters on Oct. 22 starring baritone Simon Keenlyside in the title role with Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi in the pit.

The cast is rounded out by Hibla Gerzmava as Donna Anna, Malin Byström as Donna Elvira, Serena Malfi as Zerlina, Paul Appleby as Don Ottavio, Adam Plachetka as Leporello, Matthew Rose as Masetto, and Kwangchul Youn as the Commendatore. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato hosts the broadcast.

When the production opened in September critics praised Keenlyside and stated, that he was “triumphant” and also praised  the supporting cast stating “Paul Appleby made the hapless role of Don Ottavio a thing of tenorial beauty, and Kwangchul Youn was a suitably stolid Commendatore.”

“Don Giovanni’ was the second HD performance of the season as it followed the company’s new production of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde.” This year’s broadcast also marks the second time “Don Giovanni” is shown on HD as it was part of the series in 2011 when the production first premiered with Mariusz Kwiecien.
