Missy Mazzoli’s New Opera Is Coming To Miller Theatre At Columbia University

The Miller Theatre at Columbia University will be premiering a major opera in 2018.

The opera in question is “Proving Up,” which will get its New York Premiere at the Miller Theatre. The work, with a libretto by Royce Vavrek and music by Missy Mazzoli, will appear in September 2018 using Opera Omaha’s production. “Proving Up” will be featured as the opening for Miller’s 30 Anniversary 2018-19 season.

The opera was co-commissioned by Washington National Opera, Opera Omaha and Miller Theatre at Columbia University. It will have its world premiere in Washington in January 2018 before heading to Opera Omaha in April 2018.

Mazzoli, of course, wrote the now-popular “Breaking the Waves” which has made appearances around the country. “Proving Up” is set in 1877 on a homestead in Nebraska, and showcases “the perilous early days on the prairie and the hellish heartaches and conditions endured by settlers to own a piece of land—a piece of the American dream.” The opera is based on a short story by Karen Russell.

The Miller Theatre at Columbia University also recently revealed its 2017-18 season, which will feature a number of singers in the Composer Portraits Series.
