Minnesota Opera Commissions An Adaptation of ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’

The Minnesota Opera has announced a newly commissioned work.

The company announced that “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane,” a young adult novel by Minneapolis author Kate DiCamillo, will be adapted into an opera as part of the company’s “New Works Initiatives” program which was established in 2008.

The opera, which tells the story of an aloof toy rabbit owned by a young girl named Abilene Tulane, will be for audiences of all ages and it will mark the latest work commissioned by the company. Other works that have been showcased have included “The Shining,” “Dinner at Eight” and “The Manchurian Candidate.”

The opera will mark the first one of DiCamillo’s novels is adapted into opera. The two-time winner of the prestigious Newberry Medal for children’s literature has had her books made into movies including “The Tales of Despereaux” and “Because of Winn-Dixie.” The latter is currently being adapted into a musical.
