Michael Fabiano, Julia Bullock, Karah Son, Pretty Yende, Nina Stemme Headline San Francisco Opera’s Centennial 2022-23 Season

San Francisco Opera has announced its 2022-23 season, which represents the 100th anniversary of the organization.

To that effect, the company will aim to honor its history as just the third American opera company to ever reach the centennial milestone.

The season will kick off with an “Opera Ball – The Centennial Celebration” which will feature such performers as Nadine Sierra, Michael Fabiano, Lucas Meachem, and Pene Pati. Music Director Eun Sun Kim conducts.

Performance Date: Sept. 9, 2022

The company will then showcase the world premiere of John Adams’ “Antony & Cleopatra” starring Julia Bullock, Gerald Finley, Paul Appleby, Alfred Walker, and Elizabeth DeShong. Elkhanah Pulitzer directs the production which will be conducted Eun Sun Kim.

Performance Dates: Sept. 10 – Oct. 5, 2022

Evgenia Muraveva, Gordon Bintner, Evan LeRoy Johnson, Aigul Akhmetshina, and Ferruccio Furlanetto star in Robert Carsen’s production of “Eugene Onegin.” Vassilis Christopoulos conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 25 – Oct. 14, 2022

Eun Sun Kim leads a production of “Dialogues des Carmélites” starring Heidi Stober, Michelle Bradley, Michaela Schuster, Melody Moore, and Deanna Breiwick. The new production will be directed by Olivier Py.

Performance Dates: Oct. 15 – 30, 2022

Pretty Yende, Jonathan Tetelman, and Simone Piazzola lead a new production of Verdi’s “La Traviata,” directed by Shawna Lucey. Eun Sun Kim conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 11 – Dec. 3, 2022

Matthew Ozawa directs a new production of “Orfeo ed Euridice” starring Jakub Józef Orliński, Christina Gansch, and Nicole Heaston. Peter Whelan conducts while Rena Butler provides choreography for the seminal work.

Performance Dates: Nov. 15 – Dec. 1, 2022

Karah Son, Michael Fabiano, Hyona Kim, and Lucas Meachem lead a new production of “Madama Butterfly.” Amon Miyamoto directs the new production, which will be viewed through the eyes of Cio-Cio San. Eun Sun Kim conducts.

Performance Dates: June 3 – July 1, 2023

Strauss’ “Die Frau Ohne Schatten” will be presented in a production by David Hockney as directed by Roy Rallo. Sir Donald Runnicles conducts a cast starring Camilla Nylund, Nina Stemme, David Butt Philip, Johan Reuter, and Linda Watson.

Performance Dates: June 4 – 28, 2023

The final new production of the year will be Gabriela Lena Frank’s “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” starring Daniela Mack, Alfredo Daza, Yaritza Véliz, and Jacob Ingbar. Roberto Kalb conducts a production by Lorena Maza.

Performance Dates: June 13 – 30, 2023 

The season comes to a close with a 100th anniversary concert. Details are yet to be fully announced.

Other Events

The company will bring opera to the San Francisco Public Library throughout the first half of the season.

Performance Date: Sept. 10, 2022 – Jan. 12, 2023 

The company’s “Opera in the Park” at Golden State Park. Eun Sun Kim conducts.

Performance Date: Sept. 11, 2022 

The company will present “The Traviata Encounter” in which audiences will be invited to immerse themselves in the first act of the famed opera via a night of food, drinks, and mingling with other artists.

Performance Date: Nov. 19, 2022

Eun Sun Kim will lead “The Future is Now: Adler Fellows Concert.”

Performance Date: Dec. 2, 2022

There will also be “Bohème Out of the Box” in which the company will present a shortened version of the Puccini classic around the Bay Area in a shipping-container-turned-stage.

Performance Date: March – April 2023 

There will also be performances at the Museo Italo Americano.

Performance Date: March 16 – Sept. 30, 2023 

There will also be a Historic Recordings Project, Centennial Exhibitions honoring the legends of the last 100 years, as well as tours on Oct. 23, 2022 around the War Memorial Opera House, which will also be celebrating its 90th anniversary.
