Metropolitan Opera’s New Marnie Production Among Highlights Of English National Opera’s 2017-18 Season

The English National Opera has released its schedule for the 2017-18 season which features nine operas between September 2017 and April 2018. The season includes four new productions and six revivals.

Verdi’s “Aida” is the first opera of the season kicking things off on Sept. 28 and running all the way through December. Latonia Moore and Morenike Fadayomi alternate the title role while Gywn Hughes Jones takes on Radamès. Michelle DeYoung and Dana Beth Miller share the role of Amneris and Musa Ngqungwana rounds out the cast as Amonasro. Kery-lynn Wilson and Christian Baldini share conducting duties. Phelim McDermott directs a new production.

Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” makes a return on Oct. 5, 2017 in Jonathan Miller’s classic production. That will be followed by a revival production of “Rodelinda” by Richard Jones.

Nico Muhly’s “Marnie,” based on the famous Hitchcock film of the same name, gets its World Premiere on Nov. 18, 2017 in a production by Michael Mayer. Martyn Brabbins conducts while Sasha Cooke takes on the leading role. The production is a joint production with the Metropolitan Opera.

Glass’ “Satyagraha” kicks things off in the winter with its first performance coming on Feb. 1, 2018. The famous McDermott production, conducted by Karen Kamensek, will feature Toby Spence as Gandhi.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta “Iolanthe” arrives on Feb. 13, 2018 in a production by Cal McCrystal. The ensuing show at ENO will be Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Starting on March 1, 2018, the opera will showcase Robert Carsen’s famous production with Alexander Soddy conducting.

Verdi’s “La Traviata” gets a new production starting on March 16, 2018. Directed by Daniel Kramer the production will star Claudia Boyle as the famous courtesan and Lukhanyo Moyake as his lover Alfredo.

Fiona Shaw’s “The Marriage of Figaro” makes a return with Brabbins in the pit. Lucy Crowe leads the cast as the Countess.

The final opera of the season will be “The Turn of the Screw” which will be showcased at Regent’s Park Theatre in late June.
