Metropolitan Opera Confirms New ‘Norma’ And ‘Tosca’ And The Return Of The Ring Cycle

The Metropolitan Opera has confirmed that David McVicar will direct two new productions for the 2017-18 season.

In the January Playbill’s welcome letter, Gelb noted that McVicar would be directing a new production of Bellini’s “Norma” and Puccini’s “Tosca.” The two productions will mark the director’s seventh and eighth productions at the Metropolitan Opera.

As noted last year in a New York Times article, “Norma” will be sung by Sondra Radvanovsky, Joseph Calleja and Joyce DiDonato. The starry production will open the season but dates have not been announced at the moment.

McVicar’s second production will star Anna Netrebko in her role debut as Tosca and she will alternate alongside Kristine Opolais.

The playbill also confirmed that the Ring Cycle will, be back the “season after next” and according to Gelb it will be a “quieter machine.” Wagner fans have not seen the Ring Cycle since 2013 and it will be the third revival of Robert Lepage’s divisive production.

Gelb also confirmed that William Kentridge will be back at the Metropolitan Opera after his success from last season’s “Lulu” and his production of “The Nose.” His return will likely be with the director’s upcoming “Wozzeck” for the Salzburg Festival. On the Salzburg Festival website it states that the production is a co-production with the Metropolitan Opera and the Canadian Opera.
