Metropolitan Opera 2017-18 Preview: Watch the Three ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ Stars In the Famed Mad Scene

By David Salazar

“Lucia di Lammermoor “ is, in many ways, the DIVA opera. You have a title role for soprano filled with a ton of duets (one with each of the main male leads), and at the climax of it all, opera’s most famous mad scene. And that’s without mentioning her other aria and the sextet that she dominates.

It’s a daunting task for any soprano and in many ways, the culmination of a career in bel canto style. So it is fitting that for its upcoming revival the Met Opera is bringing not one, or two, but three star sopranos to headline the role.

Here is a breakdown of each one with an adjoining video of an interpretation of the famed mad scene.

Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti

The Russian singing-actress will get things started on March 22, 2018, as the first of the three divas. She will get a total of five performances including on March 26, 30, April 3, and 7.

She has previously performed the role in Tokyo and Paris to solid acclaim.

Jessica Pratt

Second up is Jessica Pratt who will get two performances on April 11 and 14. Of the three, she is the most experienced in the role, having appeared as the tragic heroine in Paris, Torino, Florence, Rome, Amsterdam, Berlin, Bologna, Zurich, Sydney, and Milan, among many other places.

Pretty Yende

Finally, the South African soprano will close out the run with five performances on April 25, 28, May 2, 5, and 10. She made her role debut in 2015 in Berlin and went on to perform the opera in Paris.

This will be her third production of “Lucia (she did it twice in Berlin).”
