SAG Awards 2017: Meryl Streep is One Step Closer to the Oscars with SAG Nomination

By Francisco Salazar

Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Screen Actors Guild awards for her turn as “Florence Foster Jenkins.”

The Academy Award winner surprised audiences this morning as many believed she would not be in the Oscar race this year. However, Streep’s popularity and her incredible track record proved they should never be underestimated.

The actress is now one step closer to her 20th Oscar nomination as she has already received a Golden Globe nomination and even won a Critics Choice award.

The nomination was Streep’s 17th with the Screen Actor’s Guild. She has previously won for “Doubt” and “Angels in America.”

Hugh Grant also joined Streep as he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his turn in the film. The nomination marked his second as he was previously shortlisted for Best Cast in a film for “Sense and Sensibility.”

Streep will compete against Natalie Portman for “Jackie,” Emily Blunt for “The Girl on the Train,” Emma Stone for “La La Land,” and Amy Adams for “Arrival.”

“Florence Foster Jenkins” tells the story of a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice.

The SAG awards are slated to be announced on Jan. 29, 2017 on TNT.
