Medici To Live Stream ‘Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria’ starring Rolando Villazon and Magdalena Kožená

By Francisco Salazar

On March 13, Medici.tv will present the Theatre des Champs Elysse’s production of Monteverdi’s “Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria.”

The opera is set to star Rolando Villazón, who made his role debut as Ulysse earlier this year. The new production by Mariame Clément also stars Magdalena Kožená as Pénélope as well as Katherine Watson, Kresimir Spicer, Anne-Catherine Gillet, Isabelle Druet, Maarten Engeltjes, Callum Thorpe and Lothar Odinius. Early music specialist Emmanuelle Haïm will conduct the work.

“Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria” marks the second opera from Monteverdi after “Orfeo,” which is considered the first opera in the history of music. The work is based on the Homer’s “Odyssey” and is recognized as one of the classic works of the baroque repertoire.

The broadcast will be in co-production with France 2, CultureBox, medici.tv and Radio France.

Throughout the last few years, Villazon has been exploring the work of Mozart and has been releasing a Mozart series for Deutsche Grammophon. He was also involved in the world premiere of “South Pole” and is next expected to make his role debut as Lucranio in Handel’s “Ariodante.” He will also return to his signature role as Nemorino in Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” later this season. The singer, who also directs, is slated to take on the latter position for a new production of Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale.” He will also make his role debut as the eponymous character in Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” at the Baden-Baden Festival.
