Marina Rebeka Joins Rolando Villazón & Joyce DiDonato in Baden Baden ‘Clemenza di Tito’

By David Salazar

Marina Rebeka will replace Sonya Yoncheva in two Baden Baden performances of “La Clemenza di Tito.”

It has been a whirlwind season of cancellations, with Yoncheva recently called on to make her role debut in “Tosca” at the Metropolitan Opera after the cancellation of Kristine Opolais.

Rebeka will take on the role on July 6 and 9, her first performances of the role since July 2016, when she performed the opera in Zürich alongside Ramón Vargas. This time around she will perform alongside Rolando Villazón as he continues his Mozart project with conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Joyce DiDonato plays Sextus while Tara Erraught takes on Annius in the all-star cast.

Yoncheva is slated for a number of role debuts this coming season besides “Tosca.” She will be performing her first “Siberia” in Montpellier this summer before heading to Paris for her first “Don Carlo.” After that she will take on her first “Tosca” before singing her first “Luisa Miller” at the Met and her first “Il Pirata” in Milan. This would have been her first “Clemenza di Tito.”

As for Rebeka, she is slated for her first “Pearl Fishers,” “Luisa Miller” and “Simon Boccanegra” over the next season.
