María Bayo Will Play Maria Callas On Stage

Legendary Spanish soprano María Bayo will play Maria Callas.

The soprano, whose career has seen her inhabit numerous coloratura roles will turn to the stage for Terence McNally’s famed play “Master Class.” The play, which remembers’s Callas’ legendary masterclasses at Juilliard, will begin on March 15, at the Teatre Borràs de Barcelona under the direction of Marc Montserrat-Drukker.

The play won the Tony back in 1996 and has been performed all over the world including in France with Fanny Ardant who was directed by Roman Polanski. Norma Leandro and Patti LuPone have also performed the play.

According to OperaBase Bayo has not performed an operatic role since 2016 but among her most famous roles are “Marina” and “La Voix Humaine.” She has also performed works by Rossini, Granados, Verdi, Handel, and Donizetti.
