Riccardo Chailly has cancelled performances of the Verdi Requiem due to illness.

The Italian conductor was scheduled to conduct three performances of the piece. Marek Janowski will now take over the run which is set to star soprano Maria Jose Siri and mezzo soprano Daniela Barcellona. Tenor Roberto Arnica will also join them alongside bass. Riccardo Zanellato. The Rundfunkchor Berlin will also perform during the run.

Chailly is coming off a run of performances of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” at the Teatro alla Scala with Jose Siri. The production opened the 2016-17 season and received rave reviews. He is scheduled to return to La Scala in the Spring for a run of Rossini’s “La Gazza Ladra,” an opera which will be shown Live in HD.

Janowski is recognized as one of the great masters of the music of the German tradition. He has garnered acclaim for his work in Wagner, Strauss, Bruckner, Brahms and Hindemith. He has recorded numerous works from these composers and is next scheduled to conduct the San Francisco Symphony, Dortmund Philharmonic and London Philharmonic.

Performances of the Verdi’s Requiem are scheduled for Jan. 12, 14 and the 15.
