The Malmö Opera has announced a production of Philip Glass’ “Circus Days and Nights,” in collaboration with the circus company Cirkus Cirkör.

The work, which is set to world premiere on May 29, 2021, will open in Malmö before heading on tour throughout Asia, the United States, and Europe. The libretto is by David Henry Hwang and Tilde Björfors; Björfors will also direct the production.

The cast for the work will include soprano Elin Rombo, who has performed at the Opéra National de Paris, the Staatsoper Berlin, and the Royal Opera House Stockholm. Other cast members include Margaux de Valensart, Jakob Högström, Anton Ljungqvist and such circus artists as Aaron Hakala, Andreas De Ryck, Beatriz Pantojo, Methinee Wongtrakoon, Nikolas Pulka, Peter Åberg, and Simon Wilborn.

“It’s such an exhilarating feeling, reminiscent of going to the circus as a child and hoping that the circus director would choose me as a volunteer. Years later, my turn has finally come as Tilde Björfors has invited me, Elin, into the circus ring,” Rombo stated in a press release. “Philip Glass’s suggestive music echoes my heartbeats in a way that few modern composers are able to do today. It is a great honor to premiere one of his operas.”
