Malin Byström’s ‘Capriccio’ & Sonya Yoncheva’s ‘Tosca’ & The Top 5 Operas To See This Weekend Around The World

This weekend will showcase a number of stars in role debuts, new productions and one dynamic duo reteaming for a classic masterpiece. Take a look at our recommendations.

La Soto del Parral – Teatro Cafam, Colombia

Luis Fernando Pérez conducts the masterful zarzuela by Reveriano Soutullo and Juan Vert. The work, which is being presented in co-production with el Ministerio de Cultura de España, will be directed by Milagros Martín with chorusmaster La Yunna.

Rigoletto – Opera de Marseille, France

Rising star Enea Scala makes his role debut as the Duke alongside acclaimed baritone Nicola Alaimo, who also sings his first Rigoletto. Jessica Nuccio rounds out the cast in a production by Charles Roubaud. Lawrence Foster conducts.

Tosca – Opéra de Paris, France

Sonya Yoncheva and Vittorio Grigolo reteam for Puccini’s masterpiece after making their role debuts together at the Metropolitan Opera last season. They will be joined by Luca Salsi in Pierre Audi’s production. Dan Ettinger conducts.

Die Tote Stadt – Teatro alla Scala, Italy

Klaus Florian Vogt, Asmik Grigorian, and Markus Werba star in the first-ever production of Korngold’s ever-popular opera in La Scala. Alan Gilbert conducts the masterpiece in a production by Graham Vick, which is among the most highly anticipated productions of the season.

Capriccio – Teatro Real, Spain

Malin Byström stars in Strauss’ rarely performed work. She continues her development in the Strauss repertory in a new production by Christof Loy. She is joined by an immense cast that includes Josef Wagner, Norman Reinhardt, Christof Fischesser, Theresa Kronthaler, John Graham-Hall, Torben Jürgens,, Andrè Schuen, Leonor Bonilla, Juan José de León, Sebastià Peris, Gerardo López, Anna Stéphany, Juan Antonio Sanabria, Josef Wagner, Tomeu Bibiloni, and Pablo García López. Asher Fischer conducts the monumental production.
