Malin Byström Makes Surprise Return To Salzburg Festival

By Francisco Salazar

Malin Byström made an unexpected return to the Salzburg Festival this past weekend.

The Swedish soprano replaced Asmik Grigorian at last minute in the title role of Strauss’ “Salome” when Grigorian canceled due to illness.

Byström had previously performed the title role at the Royal Opera House earlier this season to rave reviews and made her role debut at the Dutch National Opera, a performance that was recorded and is set for release later this year.

Byström has had a year to remember, having won the Singer of the Year at the Opera Awards and also made a major role debut in “Fedora” at the Royal Swedish Opera. She next makes her role debut as “Tosca” at Oper Frankfurt.

Asmik Grigorian returns to “Salome” for the final two performances.
