Madison Lyric Stage To Present Britten Opera In 2018 Season

By Francisco Salazar

The Madison Lyric Stage has announced its 2018 mainstage season featuring opera and musical theater. As is the case with past season announcements, we will solely concentrate on the operatic selections that company will present this season.

Based on the Henry James novella, the company’s only opera this season will be Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw.” The chamber opera, which is performed in English,  was written by librettist Myfanwy Piper and tells the story of a young governess who is hired to care for two children in an old manor house. After her arrival, she begins to hear footsteps outside her door and cries in the night. She soon discovers that the ghosts of the former governess and valet have not left the premises and are out to possess the children.

Performance Dates: October 5-14, 2019

The rest of the offerings will include the religious thriller “Agnes of God in April,” the Stephen Sondheim/George Furth musical comedy “Company in July,” and a young artist production of the Stephen Schwartz musical “Godspell.”
