Longborough Opera Announces Cast For ‘La Calisto’

By David Salazar

The Longborough Festival Opera has announced its 2019 Young Artist Production of Cavalli’s “La Calisto.” Performances are set for July 29, 31, and August 2 and 3.

The production will be directed by Mathilde Lopez and will star Chiara Vinci, Sophie Goldrick, Zita Syme, Emma Charles, Lizzie Holmes, Jessie Tse, Felix Kemp, Neil Balfour, Brian Mcalea, and Gabriel Seawright.

“Comical and colorful, ‘La Calisto’ is a complex story of desire that is valued when it is male, but shameful when it is female,” Director Mathilde Lopez noted in a press release. “Set in a derelict shopping mall, with broken vending machines, trolleys and various female shoppers with different animal heads, our production colorfully evokes the absurdity and exhaustion of a very masculine approach to sex and relationships.”

The festival is set to kick off on June 5 and will run throughout August 3. Among the operas that it will be performing are “Das Rheingold,” “Anna Bolena,” and “Die Zauberflöte.”
