By David Salazar

Carlisle Floyd’s “Prince of Players” is coming to New York at the little Opera theater of ny (LOTNY) this February at Hunter College.

The work follows Edward Kynaston, a famous Shakespearean actor who is know for taking on female roles in the Bard’s plays during the 17th Century. However, when King Charles II allows women to perform and forbids men from taking on female roles, Kynaston must face a radical change in his career.

The production will be directed by Philip Shneidman and cast members include Sharin Apostolou, Hilary Ginther, Heather Hill, Maeve Höglund, John Kaneklides, Michael Kelly, Daniel Klein, Ron Loyd, Angela Mannino, Raùl Melo, Shea Owens, Elizabeth Pojanowski, Jessica Sandidge, Marc Schreiner, Nicholas Simpson and Bray Wilkins.

Richard Cordova will be at the podium. The conductor has worked at such companies as Oper der Stadt Bonn, Opera North (New Hampshire), Sarasota Opera, Opera Company of Boston, Long Beach Opera, Berkshire Opera, Florida Grand Opera and Baltimore Opera among others.

This is the third Floyd opera that LOTNY has taken on. The company performed “Slow Dusk & Markheim” in December 2014.

LOTNY is known for taking on rare works throughout its history. The company has tackled composers such as Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Gustav Holst, Inessa Zaretsky, Mozart, Rossini and Gluck. However, when they have taken on better known composers such as Mozart or Rossini, they have opted for rarer operas such as “Mitridate Re di Ponto” and “Opportunity Makes the Thief.”

Tickets start at $45.
