LA Opera to Stream Short Opera Films by Missy Mazzoli & Ellen Reid

The Los Angeles Opera has announced the release of three digital opera shorts directed by James Darrah that will stream on its On Now platform.

First up is Darrah’s vision for Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s “The West is a Land of Infinite Beginnings,” beased on Karen Russell’s surreal short story about a farming family attempting to fulfill the requirements of the Homestead act.The film opera stars Andrew Harris, Cree Carrico, Abigail Nims, and Michael Slattery with Christopher Rountree conducting.

Streaming Dates: Jan. 15-29, 2021

Ellen Reid’s “Lumee’s Dream” arrives a few weeks later. The work, also directed by Darrah, is inspired by a scene from “p r i s m” and focuses on the mother of the teenage girl engaging in a moment of reflection. The opera stars Rebecca Jo Loeb and violist Nadia Sirota.

Streaming Dates: Jan. 29 – Feb. 12, 2021

Finally, the company will present Reid’s “p r i s m” in a filmed production from 2019, directed by Darrah. The showcase stars Rebecca Jo Loeb as the mother and Anna Schubert as Bibi.
