La Monnaie Announces Changes for 2020-21 Season

La Monnaie de Mont has announced alterations to its 2020-21 season.

The Belgium company announced that the world premiere of “The Time of Our Singing” has been postponed until next season, while “The Sleeping Thousand” production has been canceled.

As a result, the company will present a Corona-proof alternative, “Is this the end?” The new project is a pop requiem in three parts by Belgian composer Jean-Luc Fafchamps and director Ingrid von Wantoch Rekowski, of which La Monnaie will program the first part in September.

In a press release, La Monnaie’s representatives noted, “Even though the quarantine restrictions are being gradually phased out, we were still confronted with many question marks for our September productions: questions about the travel possibilities for our international artists, about the sanitary measures for our musicians in the pit, about the delays that our set and costume Workshops have had to suffer through, and about the safety procedures to welcome you in our theater in a responsible manner.”

La Monnaie is still set to present a recital by French coloratura Sabine Devieilhe, which will take place as planned on Sept. 16th. The opening concert by the Symphony Orchestra will also be maintained, however, the program will be adapted to a smaller chamber orchestra.
