The Boston Odyssey Opera has announced its new season and it is packed with a number of operatic gems.

With the 2016-17 season dedicated to the writings of Oscar Wilde, the 2017-18 will shift focus to Joan of Arc. Aptly titled “Trial by Fire: Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years War,” the new season will feature operas related to the theme.

The season kicks off with the Boston Premiere of Tchaikovsky’s “The Maid of Orleans” on Sept. 16, 2017, at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. Kate Aldrich will take on the lead role.

In late October, the company will put on Donizetti’s “The Siege of Calais.” The show, which is currently playing at the Glimmerglass Festival, will get two performances at the Huntington Avenue Theatre on Oct. 26 and 28.

In December, Norman Dello Joio’s “The Trial of Rouen” will get its world premiere at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall and in February, Honegger’s “Jeanne d’Arc” will appear at Harvard University.

The season comes to a close on April 5 and 7 with Verdi’s “Giovanna d’Arco” at the Huntington Avenue Theatre.

Looking at the sheer number of artists who have produced works dedicated to Joan of Arc, we might well believe Mark Twain’s assertion that she ‘is easily and by far the most extraordinary person the human race has ever produced,’” said Artistic and General Director Gil Rose in a press release. “Unlike many of opera’s heroines, Joan of Arc is an unapologetically strong female protagonist who doesn’t need a sweeping romance.”
