Joseph Calleja will appear in the Official Opening Concert of the 2017 Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017.

The tenor made the announcement via social media on Thursday. He will perform selections from “Die Zauberflöte,” Flotow’s “Martha,” “Roméo et Juliette,” “Werther,” “Tosca,” “Le Cid” and a number of Verdi operas including “Rigoletto” and “Un Giorno di Regno.”

Brian Schembri will conduct the Malta Philharmonic.

Calleja is in the midst of a rather busy start to 2017. Fresh off singing “La Bohème” in Munich at the Bayerische Staatsoper. He next heads to the Metropolitan Opera to reprise the role of Il Duca di Mantua in Verdi’s “Rigoletto” before heading to Chicago to play Don José in Bizet’s “Carmen.” The first half of his 2017 finishes up with Tosca in Northington in June and July.

The tenor is also slated to release a new album dedicated to Verdi’s music. It has been revealed that Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu will appear on the album, though there is no confirmation what she will sing. One video posted on social media hinted that the two might be singing the duet from Verdi’s “Otello.”
