Jonas Kaufmann to Release ‘Das Lied Von Der Erde’ Album

By David Salazar

Jonas Kaufmann has just announced that he will be releasing a recording of Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde.”

The recording will be released April 7, 2017 and features Jonathan Nott is conducting the Vienna Philharmonic.

As of yet there are no details on who the mezzo soprano in the recording will be, though there were previous reports that the tenor would be taking on both vocal parts in the famed work. This may well be the case as the official image released only showcases Kaufmann’s name.

There have been a number of high profile recordings featuring a tenor and baritone. Among them is one starring Fritz Wunderlich and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

This will be Kaufmann’s sixth CD for Sony Classical since he moved to the company from Decca. His first release was a Verdi album in 2013 which was promptly followed by a rendition of Schubert’s “Winterreise,” an operetta album, a Puccini album and one dedicated to Italian song. Also on the market are nine DVD’s published by Sony. Among them are productions of “Fidelio,” “Parsifal,” the Mascagni-Leoncavallo double bill, “La Forza del Destino,” “Don Carlo,” “La Fanciulla del West,” “Manon Lescaut” and “An Evening With Puccini.”

Kaufmann recently made a triumphant return to the stage in Wagner’s “Lohengrin” in Paris after a few months out of commission. The tenor has been sidelined since October after announcing that side effects from medication had caused a haematoma. After that he committed to remaining on vocal rest until his haematoma “completely subsided.” This forced him to cancel numerous engagements, including a debut in Monte Carlo, the Grand Opening concert Hamburg as well as the Nobel Prize ceremony.
