Jonas Kaufmann is a hard man to pinpoint these days. The tenor recently noted that he is going to curtail his performances around the world, limiting himself to European engagements for lengthy production runs.

But the tenor is still slated to appear in numerous concerts around the world, including a June concert on the fourth at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam.

The concert, which will mark his solo debut in Holland, will feature performances alongside soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek. The duo will kick things off with the love duet from Verdi’s “Otello” and will serve as a final warm up for the tenor before he sings the entire role in London later that month.

Then they will follow it up with the final scene from the first act of Wagner’s “Die Walküre,” a work they performed together at the Metropolitan Opera a few years ago.

Conductor Jochen Rieder will lead the Residentie Orkest. The concert is slated to last one hour and 45 minutes with prices starting at around 120 euros. Moreover, those interested in attending cannot purchase more than six tickets per person.

The concert will be featured as part of the festival’s 70th birthday celebration.

Mr. Kaufmann may be limiting himself to Europe for new productions, he has several of those in 2017-18. (Don Carlos-Paris, Chenier-Wien, Parsifal-München). But he certainly isn’t avoiding long international flights. Australia in August, China in November, Japan in January, New York in January, Boston/NY in April. His children are older now but his new partner accompanies him to almost all his performances (& appearances). But she has engagements of her own in Europe that may further limit his willingness to venture very far. Regardless of the specific reason, I and other Canadian and American scraping together funds to come to Europe. I am making trip #3 for Otello. Worth every penny.
