Jonas Kaufmann, Anna Netrebko, Maria Agresta, Lisette Oropesa, Pretty Yende & Sondra Radvanovsky Lead Teatro San Carlo’s 2021-22 Season

The Teatro San Carlo has announced its 2021-22 season featuring 14 operas, 35 concert, and 4 ballets. Here is a look at the operas and the vocal performances.

The season opens with Verdi’s Otello with Jonas Kaufmann singing the title role. Michele Mariotti conducts the new production by Mario Martone. Kaufmann will alternate the title role with Yusif Eyvazov and Maria Agresta will play Desdemona. Igor Golovatenko will play Iago.

Performance Dates: Nov. 21-Dec. 14, 2021

Nadine Sierra will perform Donizetti’sLucia di Lammermoor” in a production directed by the Italian movie director Gianni Amelio. Carlo Montanaro will conduct a cast that includes Gabriele Viviani, Pene Pati, and Alexandros Stavrakakis.

Performance Dates: Jan. 15-29, 2022

Bellini’s La Sonnambula will be conducted by Lorenzo Passerini and will star Alexander Vinogradov, Manuela Custer, Jessica Pratt, Lawrence Brownlee, and Valentina Varriale.

Anna Netrebko sings the title role of Verdi’s “Aida” in a production by Franco Dragone and conducted by Michelangelo Mazza. Anna Pirozzi will also sing the title role with Yusif Eyvazov and Stefano La Colla as Radamès, Ekaterina Gubanova and Agnieszka Rehlis as Amneris, Nicolas Testé as Ramfis, and Franco Vassallo as Amonasro.

Performance Dates: Feb. 15-26, 2022

Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky returns to San Carlo Theater for two performances of “The Three Queens,” with the final scenes from the Tudor Trilogy by Gaetano Donizetti (“Anna Bolena,” “Maria Stuarda” and “Roberto Devereux”). Riccardo Frizza conducts.

Performance Dates: Feb. 19 & 22, 2022

Dan Ettinger will conduct Cosi fan tutte in a production by Chiara Muti. The cast will include Mariangela Sicilia (Fiordiligi), Serena Malfi (Dorabella), Alessio Arduini (Guglielmo), Giovanni Sala (Ferrando), Damiana Mizzi (Despina), and Paolo Bordogna (Don Alfonso).

Performance Dates: March 23-April 2, 2022

Tosca by Puccini will be conducted by Juraj Valčuha and directed by Eduardo De Angelis. Oksana Dyka sings the title role, Piero Pretti makes his debut in the role of Mario Cavaradossi and Ildar Abdrazakov makes his debut in the role of Baron Scarpia.

Performance Dates: April 20-May 3, 2022

The “7 Deaths of Maria Callas” by Marina Abramović and Marko Nikodijević will star Marina Abramović alongside Kristine Opolais, Nino Machaidze, Roberta Mantegna, Selene Zanetti, Annalisa Stroppa, Valeria Sepe, and Zuzana Marková.

Performance Dates: May 13-15, 2022

Fabio Luisi will conduct Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin in Barrie Kosky’s production. The cast includes Elena Stikhina, Artur Rucinski, Michael Fabiano, and Alexander Tsymbalyuk.

Performance Dates: June 15-26, 2022

Riccardo Frizza conducts Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Filippo Crivelli’s production. The opera stars Aleksandra Kurzak (Rosina), Xabier Anduaga (Count of Almaviva), Carlo Lepore (Don Bartolo), and Davide Luciano (Figaro).

Performance Dates: July 6-16, 2022

Verdi’s “La Traviata will be directed by Ferzan Ozpetek and conducted by Francesco Ivan Ciampa. Pretty Yende and Rosa Feola share the lead role alongside Francesco Demuro and Yijie Shi as Alfredo Germont and Carlos Alvarez and Simone Del Savio as Giorgio Germont.

Performance Dates: July 22-31, 2022

Lisette Oropesa will make her role debut as Elvira in I Puritani by Bellini. Emilio Sagi directs and Giacomo Sagripanti conducts. The cast also includes Xabier Anduaga (Arturo Talbo), Davide Luciano (Sir Riccardo Forth), and Alexandros
Stavrakakis (Sir Giorgio).

Performance Dates: Sept. 7-16, 2022

Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns will be led by Dan Ettinger and directed by Damián Szifron. Anita Rachvelishvili and Brian Jagde sing the title roles.

Performance Dates: Sept. 29-Oct. 9, 2022

The season concludes Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” directed by Lluìs Pasqual. Constantin Trinks conducts a stellar cast that includes Stuart Skelton, René Pape, Nina Stemme, Brian Mulligan, and Okka von der Damerau.

Performance Dates: Oct. 29-Nov. 5, 2022 

Concerts 

Juraj Valčuha conducts Lise Davidsen in the Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss.

Performance Date: Dec. 12, 2021

Lauren Michelle joins Juraj Valčuha  in a program of music by Ravel, Poulenc, and Prokofiev.

Performance Date: Dec. 18, 2021

Pretty Yende sings a recital with music by Rossini, Verdi, Donizetti, Strauss, and Liszt. Michele D’Elia performs on piano.

Performance Date: March 12, 2022

Dan Ettinger conducts Rosa Feola in a concert dedicated to the music of Mozart.

Performance Date: March 26, 2022

Olga Peretyatko and Elena Bashkirowa perform a recital of Glinka, Prokofiev, Rachmanioff, and Shostakovich.

Performance Date: Sept. 22, 2022

Ingo Metzmacher leads Adriana Di Paola, Giulio Pelligra, and Dario Russo in Stravinsky and Mendelssohn.

Performance Date: Oct. 8, 2021

There will also be two recitals on the program starring and Olga Peretyatko, as well as 10 chamber concerts with musicians from the San Carlo Orchestra.
