Jonas Kaufmann, Anna Netrebko And All The Major Stars in Bayerische Staatsoper’s 2017-18 Season

No opera house has more superstars on the roster next season than the Bayerische Staatsoper.

Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann, arguably the two biggest stars in the opera world, will both appear in Munich in 2017-18, albeit in limited runs. Their appearances in America are limited to a total of eight shows between the two of them. In Munich, that number is 12.

Netrebko is only getting two performances of “Tosca” in Munich on July 9 and 13. Kaufmann sings five performances of “Parsifal” in June/July, four performances of “Andrea Chénier” in November and December and one performance of “Die Walküre.”

The Divas

Elina Garanca will be doing three performances in the title role of “Carmen” in February while Diana Damrau will perform three showings of “Lucia di Lammermoor” in December and two presentations of “La Traviata” in July.

Munich darling Anja Harteros returns to “Andrea Chénier,” “Arabella,” “Tosca” and “Un Ballo in Maschera” for a total of 15 performances. She also gives a recital in July. Nina Stemme, another house favorite, appears in “Parsifal” and “Der Ring Des Nibelungen.”

Adrianne Pieczonka sings “Der Fliegende Holländer” and “Der Rosenkavalier” and Olga Peretyatko takes on “Il Turco in Italia” alongside Ildebrando D’Arcangelo for three performances.

Italian soprano Carmen Giannattasio will lead “Les Vêpres Sicilienne” and “Mefistofele” while American soprano Ailyn Pérez steps into Mozart’s repertoire in “Così Fan Tutte” and sings three performances of “Carmen.” Isabel Leonard will also star in “La Cenerentola.”

Finally, Krassimira Stoyanova will showcase her talents in a recital during the summer festival and in “Ariadne auf Naxos.”

The Tenors

Juan Diego Flórez will take on three performances of “Lucia di Lammermoor” in May and will also sing his first stage performances of “Lucrezia Borgia” alongside the legendary Edita Gruberova.

Vittorio Grigolo will appear in a single performance of “L’Elisir d’Amore” alongside Pretty Yende. Polish tenor Piotr Beczala sings the role of Edgardo in “Lucia di Lammermoor” with Damrau and gives a recital in the summer while Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja takes on “Macbeth,” “Tosca” and “Mefistofele.

German tenor Klaus Florian Vogt will perform on tour in the title role of “Tannhäuser” in Tokyo.

Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón performs a recital in July.

The Low Voices

Baritone Thomas Hampson will appear in “Tosca” with Netrebko while Simon Keenlyside reprises his acclaimed interpretation of “Macbeth.” René Pape appears in “Parsifal” and Erwin Schrott stars in “Mefistofele” and “Vêpres.” Günther Groissböck also gets a recital in the summer.
