International Opera Awards 2017: Annual Awards Open Nomination Ballots

By OperaWire

The International Opera Awards have opened up nomination ballots for their annual awards ceremony.

The ballot is open to the public and each person can choose who they want to nominate for the operatic highlights of 2016. The ballot allows the person to  nominate in as many or as few categories as they please and multiple submissions are acceptable. Among the categories are Female Singer, Male Singer, Conductor, Newcomer, New Production, DVD recording and Theater.

The ballots will be open until Jan. 8 and once all ballots are submitted and tabulated, the International Opera Awards will announce the nominees. The judging of the awards will later be carried out by a jury of industry professionals headed by “Opera” editor John Allison. The awards will later be presented at the annual ceremony.

Harry Hyman founded the International Opera Awards in 2012 to raise the profile of opera as an art form, to recognize and reward success in opera and to generate funds to provide bursaries for aspiring talent in opera from around the world. It is also recognized as the Opera’s Oscars and many of the world’s greatest singers attend the ceremony.

Among the singers who have been awarded an International Opera Award include Ermonela Jaho, Anja Harteros, Nina Stemme, Sophie Bevan, Christian Gerhaher, Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau, Stuart Skelton, Mariella Devia and Joseph Calleja. Other recipients include Sir Antonio Pappano, Gianandrea Noseda and Semyon Bychkov.
