Hamburg State Opera 2017-18 Season To Include Angela Gheorghu, Jonas Kaufmann, Kristine Opolais And Olga Peretyatko

The Hamburg State Opera has announced its 2017-18 Season with six new productions and four productions in the opera stabile series.

New Productions 

The company will first present a new production of Wagner’s “Parsifal” with Achim Freyer directing. Kent Nagano leads an international cast that includes Andreas Schager in the title role and Wolfgang Koch as Amfortas. The production opens Sept. 16.

On Oct. 29 Monteverdi’s “Il Ritorno d’Ulisse” takes center stage in a new production by Willy Decker. Vaclav Luks conducts Kurt Streit in the title role with Sara Mingardo as his wife Penelope.

Beethoven’s “Fidelio” will follow opening on Jan. 28, 2018 with Nagano conducting Simone Schneider as Leonore and Christopher Ventris in the role of Florestan. Falk Struckmann sings the role of Rocco in Georges Delnon’s new production.

Verdi’s “Requiem” will get a stage treatment on March 11 with Calixto Bieito in the director’s chair. The production stars Dmytro Popov, Nadezhda Karyazina, Maria Bengtsson and Gábor Bretz.

On May 20 Jan Dvorak’s opera “Frankenstein” will premiere in a production by Philipp Stölzl which will be co-directed by Philipp Krenn. Johannes Harneit conducts Viktor Rud in the title role.

Peter Ruzicka’s “Benjamin” will be the final production opening on June 3. The production will be directed by Yona Kim and Ruzicka will conduct the work.

Opera Stabile

The opera Stabile section will present four unique works including Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga’s “The Arab Princess,” Samuel Penderbayne’s “I.th.Ak.A.,” Anastasuja Kadisa, Alexander Chernyshkov and Andreas Eduardo Frank’s “Das Floß” and Georg Philipp Telemann’s “Miriways.”

Repertoire

The season will also feature 24 revivals of some of the most popular works including Verdi’s “Aida,” “Otello,”  “Simon Boccanegra,” “La Traviata” and “Rigoletto” as well as Puccini’s “Tosca,” “Madama Butterfly” and “La Bohème.” Wagner’s “Die Walküre” and “The Flying Dutchman” will also be presented. as will Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” and “Die Zauberflöte.”

The season will include a full week of Italian opera from March 11 to April 11 showcasing “La Traviata,” “Tosca” and Madama Butterfly” as well as Verdi’s “Requiem.”

The season will also feature a number of prominent stars including Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros in one performance of “Tosca.” Angela Gheorghiu will also bring her acclaimed portrayal of Tosca to the theater.  George Gagnidze and Elena Zhidkova lend their star power to the double bill “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” while Ailyn Pérez and Dinara Alieva will share the role of Violetta in “La Traviata.”

Massimo Giordano stars in “Simon Boccanegra” while Kristine Opolais brings her acclaimed “Madama Butterfly” to the theater.

Simon O’Neill stars in Berg’s “Wozzeck” and Arturo Chacón-Cruz brings his star power to “La Bohème.” Lise Lindstrom is Brünhilde in “Die Walküre” and legendary baritone Sergei Leiferkus takes part in Berg’s “Lulu.”

Roberto Frontali and Marco Berti will star in “Aida” with Kristin Lewis and Anita Hartig headlines Gounod’s “Faust with Jean-Francois Borras. Carlo Ventre takes on the title role in “Otello” while Olga Peretyatko is the Countess in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro.”
