Meryl Streep’s “Florence Foster Jenkins” has been nominated for four Golden Globes.

The Motion Picture by Stephen Frears landed nominations in the Best Comedy or Musical categories. The film was nominated for Best Picture in a Musical or Comedy while Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant landed nominations in their respective Best Actress and Best Actor categories.

The big surprise for the film was the inclusion of Simon Helberg, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

The film marks the return of Opera at the Golden Globes. While “Florence Foster Jenkins” does not tell the story of a famous opera singer, Jenkins’ story is legendary to the opera community as she is known for having the worst voice of all time. Her recording, which she paid for, is also one of the most sold records of all time and has never been out of print.

Frears’ new film features some of the most popular arias in opera and also features rising star Aida Garifullina, who is currently at the Vienna State Opera performing Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore.”

In the past the Golden Globes have nominated numerous opera films including the beloved Franco Zeffirelli versions of Verdi’s “Otello” and “La Traviata.” Both films received nominations for Best Foreign Film. Francesco Rosi’s 1984 version of “Carmen” was also nominated for the Golden Globes in the same category.

Ingmar Bergman’s 1975 version of “The Magic Flute”  was also nominated for Best Foreign Film and finally last year Sumi Jo’s song “Simple Song” was nominated for Best Song for the film “Youth.”

The Golden Globes will be handed out on Jan. 8.
