Fresno Grand Opera has canceled the rest of its 2016-17 season after declaring Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

“This is a decision that was not made lightly, considering our community of dedicated patrons and years of quality performances that were passionately presented,” noted a statement on the company’s official website.

The company had already been mired in chaos after General Director Matthew Buckman stepped down in February due to personal reasons, mainly that he was living in Sacramento with his wife-to-be and found it difficult to commute between the two cities consistently and do the best job possible.

“This is not a decision I take lightly, and I make it with a heavy heart, as I have cherished the time I have spent working in the arts in Fresno and the friendships I’ve made,” he said at the time. “Our work, and what we’ve accomplished in saving opera for our community, will hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life, but it has come time to follow my heart to Sacramento, the woman I love, and the life together we’ve been dreaming of for quite some time.”

There was also the controversial issue with the company’s former head Ronald Eichman filing a lawsuit for defamation.
