Fresh Squeezed Opera To Mount ‘Here Be Sirens’

By David Salazar

Fresh Squeezed Opera has announced its upcoming production of “Here Be Sirens” by Kate Soper.

The production is slated for Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. EDT at the National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY.

Per a press release, “’Here Be Sirens’ presents the daily life of three sirens, who kill time on their island as they await an endless procession of doomed sailors. Peitho revels in the luxurious sensuality of their rite; Phaino stonily enacts the ritual with no inner feeling; and Polyxo longs for escape into the world of the real, delving into centuries of scholarship and research on her species in an attempt to untwist their circumstances. As the opera goes on, the sirens re-enact the abduction of Persephone, encounter (and battle) their favored sisters the Muses.”
The work will feature Victoria Benson as Polyxo, Claire Myers McCormick as Peitho, and Devony Smith as Phaino. All three are sopranos.

Fresh Squeezed Opera was founded in 2013 as an opera company dedicated to showcasing new operas. In doing so, the organization constantly turns to emerging artists and composers to create new performances.
