It’s the season to announce new seasons and Vancouver Opera has continued the trend, revealing its offerings for 2017-18.

The company bows on Oct. 13 with a production of Puccini’s “Turandot.” The show will get a total of five performances on Oct. 15, 17, 19 and 21.

The company then takes a hiatus until the new year, ringing in January with five presentations of Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” on Jan. 19, 21, 23, 25 and 27, 2018.

In April another repertory favorite arrives on the Queen Elizabeth Theatre stage in the form of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin.” The first performance is on April 27 with subsequent shows on the 29th and May 3rd and 5th.

But running alongside Tchaikovsky’s masterwork will be a new opera, “The Overcoat.” Based on the play by Wendy Gorling and Morris Panych, this opera is a co-production with Toronto’s Canadian Stage Company and Tapestry Opera. The music is by James Rolfe and the work will be performed at the Vancouver Playhouse starting on April 28, 2018. It will get a whopping 12 performances.

The opera company will also showcase “Requiem for a Lost Girl,” a work written and directed by Onalea Gilbertson as part of the Education & Community Outreach. Marcel Bergmann composed the music for the show, which has yet to receive a date for its performance.
