Everything You Need to Know About The Atlanta Opera’s 2017-18 Season

With each passing week, the opera world gets the lates ton the 2017-18 season. The Atlanta Opera has joined the fray announcing the six operas that its audiences will get to clamor over between November 2017 and June 2018.

The Flying Dutchman – Nov. 4, 7, 10, 12 (2017)

Wagner’s early masterwork  gets a new production by the company’s General and Artistic director Tomer Zvulun. Arthur Fagen conducts while Jay Hunter Morris takes on the role of Erik, Melody Moore performs Senta and Wayne Tigges takes on the Dutchman.

The Daughter of the Regiment – Feb. 24, 27, March 2, 4 (2018)

After a few months off, the company resumes its season with Donizetti’s charming comedy. Andriana Chuchman stars in the role of Marie while Santiago Ballerini will tackle the nine high C’s of Tonio’s famous aria.

Out of Darkness: Two Remain – April 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15 (2018)

Jacke Heggie has become a major opera exponent of late his “Out of Darkness” will get a whopping eight performances in early April as part of Atlanta Opera’s “Discoveries” series. The work centers on Holocaust survivors haunted by the ghosts of their past. The work is based in part on true stories.

Carmen – April 28, May 1, 4, 6 (2018)

Bizet’s masterwork will get a new production with mezzo-soprano Zanda Svede taking on the title role. Gianluca Terranov plays Don Jose while Edwark Parks is Escamillo. Breena Corner directs and Fagen conducts the run of four performances.

Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street – June 8, 12, 15, 17 (2018)

The Stephen Sondheim classic will be directed by Zvulun with Shuler Hensley in the title role and Meredith Arwady as his murderous sidekick Mrs. Lovett.

The Seven Deadly Sins

The final work featured on the company’s new season, also as part of its “Discoveries” series, is a sung ballet that will be directed by Brian Clowdus. There are currently no dates or singers attached to the piece.
