Everything You Need to Know About the 2017 Festival d’Aix-en-Provence

The Aix-en-Provence festival has announced the schedule for 2017, which will feature one new production after another with many of opera’s greatest singers.

Pinocchio – July 3-16

The festival will kick off with the World Premiere of Phillippe Boesmans’ “Pinocchio” on July 3, 2017. The opera will feature Chloé Briot in the title role with Stéphane Degout as the troupe director, the fairy by soprano Marie-Eve Munger, the bad student by Julie Boulianne and the cabaret director, the judge, a crook and a murderer will be portrayed by Yann Beuron. The opera will run for six shows through July 16.

Carmen – July 4-20

On July 4, the festival will showcase a new festival production of Bizet’s “Carmen.” The production will be directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov with Stéphanie d’Oustrac as Carmen, Elsa Dreisig as Micaëla and tenor Michael Fabiano in the role of Don José. The run of eight performances will end on July 20.

The Rake’s Progress – July 5-18

Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rake’s Progress” will take the stage for five performances starting on July 5 and ending on the 18th. The new festival production will be directed by Simon McBurney with a cast that includes Paul Appleby, Julia Bullock, Andrew Watts and Kyle Ketelsen.

Don Giovanni – July 6-21

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will kick off its run of eight shows on July 6 with a cast that includes Eleonora Buratto as Donna Anna, Isabel Leonard as Donna Elvira, Julie Fuchs as Zerlina, Philippe Sly as the Don and Nahuel di PIerro as Leoporello. The new festival production will be directed by Jean-François Sivadier.

Erismena – July 7-21

A rare baroque work, Francesco Cavalli’s “Erismena” will premiere on July 7 with Francesco Aspromonte and Carlo Vistoli leading the cast. That opera will get eight performances through the 21st.

The Festival will also feature a concert performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” on July 19, 2017.
