Eugene Opera Raised Enough For Its 2017-2018 season

Coming back from a financial scare the Eugene Opera has successfully raised enough money to reopen for the 2017-18 season as announced on Tuesday. After canceling the last two shows of its 2016-17 season because of low ticket sales and a budget gap of $200,000, the company has raised $60,000 from community donations that were matched by several major supporters.

On top of that, it has also obtained 40% of the individual donations needed for next season, which includes a $20,000 challenge that will provide a one-for-one match, doubling gifts made between now and December for the 2017-18 season.

In terms of management restructuring, the company’s focus is on long-term stability and searching for a new executive director that lives within the Eugene area. As of now, the executive director will lead fundraising and business management for the company.

General Director Mark Beudert announced in March that he’d resign when his contract ends on June 30, he lives in Indiana and flies to Eugene several times a year. With this new season, the company seriously took requests from the community for its two upcoming shows.

It turns out that they want to see a fun opera, so the company will put on Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” under the conductor Andrew Bisantz. The two performances will be on Dec. 30 and 31 in Silva Hall at the Hult Center.

And the second request was a unique production, so Eugene Opera will show Piazzolla’s tango opera “Maria de Buenos Aries.” The performances will be on May 4 and 6 in the Soreng Theater at the Hult Center.
