Eugene Opera Loses General Director

By Francisco Salazar

Eugene Opera General Director Mark Beudert will not renew his contract with the company.

Beudert said on Monday that he would remain until June 30 but after the tumultuous year, ending in more than $200,000 in debt, he would no longer continue. The company had to cancel two full productions that it had remaining for this current season.

Opera board chair Barbara Wheatley said that structure contributed to the opera’s debt crisis. In part, Beudert runs all Eugene Opera operations on a part-time basis from Indiana, making it a true struggle for the company to work.

In a statement, Wheatley noted “We’ve just reached a stage where that as a model is not going to work for us. What we would expect is to split the position. What we need here in town is an executive director.”

The company is now in discussions with a new General manager and is currently fundraising for next season. The company must raise $20,000 for next season to actually happen.
