English National Opera Cancels Performance Of ‘La Traviata’

By Francisco Salazar

Tonight’s performance of “La Traviata” at the English National Opera was canceled an hour before curtain.

According to the Independent, the performance was canceled due to a gas leak. As a result, audience members were evacuated from nearby locations after emergency services attended a leak in St. Martin’s Lane shortly after 6 p.m. local time.

The production, which opened last month, is currently starring soprano Claudia Boyle in the leading role. She is joined by rising tenor Lukhanyo Moyake as Alfredo, in his UK debut and Alan Opie, who celebrates 50 years since he first sang with ENO. The production, directed by Daniel Kramer, received the negative reviews with critics noting, “Kramer hasn’t fully engaged with Verdi’s emotional drama.”

The production was also criticized for having orgies in the first and third scenes of the work.
