Elina Garanca’s ‘La Favorite’ Arrives on DVD

By Francisco Salazar

Donizetti’s “La Favorite” has been announced for release on Deutsche Grammophon.

The recording comes from the Bayerische Staatsoper and stars Elina Garanca, Mariusz Kwiecien, and Matthew Polenzani. Staged by Amelie Niermeyer, the production debuted earlier this fall and received rave reviews.

Critics said, “Elīna Garanča as the nominal protagonist of the opera carried out her role driving the whole ensemble and keeping the storyline together.”

The opera marked the second production reuniting Kwiecien, Garanca, and Polenzani after the Metropolitan Opera’s “Roberto Devereux” last season.

The three reunite this summer for a revival of “La Favorite” at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

The DVD is Garanca’s sixth with Deutsche Grammophon. The company has released DVDs of Garanca’s performances in “Carmen,” “La Cenerentola,” “Anna Bolena,” a Baden-Baden Gala, and a gala with Gustavo Dudamel. Garanca has also released six solo albums with the company.

Garanca is slated to sing “Don Carlos” at the Paris Opera, “Samson et Dalila” at the Vienna State Opera, “Carmen” at the Bayerische Staatsoper, and “Cavalleria Rusticana” at the Royal Opera House. She will also perform concerts in Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Latvia, and Estonia.
