Dmitri Hvorostovsky Makes Another Set of High Profile Cancelations

By David Salazar

Dmitri Hvorostovsky has canceled all of his Vienna engagements, according to the Vienna State Opera.

This is the latest in a long list of cancelations by the hugely popular Russian artist. He was scheduled to perform in Verdi’s “Rigoletto,” “Un Ballo in Maschera,” and “Otello.” He is also no longer on the cast list for the upcoming performances at the Liceu in Barcelona, which included a production of “The Demon” and “Un Ballo in Maschera.”

He does remain on the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden’s website as scheduled to sing “Rigoletto” next season. That is, however, likely to change to reflect Hvorostovsky’s current website, which has no upcoming performances.

In the summer of 2015, Hvorostovsky was diagnosed with a brain tumor and despite getting medical treatment, he continued performing and recording CDs.

However, in late September 2016, the singer had to withdraw from his engagements in Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra” at the Vienna State Opera while in December 2016, he canceled his planned debut performances of Verdi’s “Don Carlos” at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater. He later announced that he would not be performing in opera productions for the time being so he could concentrate on his treatment. That meant withdrawing from a highly anticipated revival of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” at the Metropolitan Opera with Anna Netrebko. However, he surprised fans and audiences earlier in May at the Metropolitan Opera 50th Anniversary Gala when he performed an aria from Verdi’s “Rigoletto.”
