Diana Damrau revealed that one of her dream roles is the Witch in “Hansel and Gretel.”

During a Facebook live at the Metropolitan Opera, the soprano was asked about one role she dreams of singing. While she did not divulge any of the operas currently planned through 2020, Damrau did state that the last role she wants to sing is the witch in Humperdinck’s classic.

The soprano also revealed that after singing Juliette, she realized that it was her favorite role that she has ever sung because for her Gounod’s music really evoked the greatness of Shakespeare. As she noted “It’s Shakespeare.” When Damrau took on the role she was doubtful that it would be anything like the original play but after doing the work she said, “This was the most amazing experience.” Damrau also revealed that for her Vittorio Grigolo is the “best Romeo on the planet.”

During the Facebook Live Damrau also spoke about several activities she loves to do in New York including museums, shopping and eating out in restaurants.

When asked what character she would love to be in real life, Damrau said she was very happy being herself.

Diana Damrau is currently singing the role of Elvira in Bellini’s “I Puritani” at the Metropolitan Opera where she has been receiving rave reviews. OperaWire noted that the soprano was a “tour de force” as Elvira and that she had created a complex character. Damrau next sings the three heroines in Offenbach’s “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.”
