Counter Tenor David Daniels will be cancelling his performances of his December run of “Rodelinda” at the Bolshoi Theatre due to illness. The announcement was made on the singer’s website Sunday.

“He hopes to find the earliest opportunity to participate in another production at the Bolshoi Theatre. David sends his sincere thanks for the understanding of his colleagues and cast-mates, and the kind understanding of the audiences at the Bolshoi Theatre,” says the announcement on his website.

Daniels, who was slated to take on the role of Bertarido, will be replaced by Gerald Thompson.

The performances were set to start on Dec. 13 and will run through the 19^th. Daniels is slated to return in March for a recital at the Wigmore Hall in London with pianist Martin Katz. Then he heads to Atlanta, Georgia for two performances of Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice.” Those performances will be recorded live.

Daniels is also scheduled to perform at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival as the artist-in-residence from August 13 through 19.

The last few weeks alone have seen numerous high profile cancellations including Dmitri Hvorostovsky announcing that he will no longer perform in opera productions for the foreseeable future (he also cancelled a run at the Bolshoi). Meanwhile superstar tenor Jonas Kaufmann cancelled his appearance at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony and a recital in Monte Carlo.
