By Francisco Salazar

This summer over 30 artists will make their Union Avenue Opera debut during its 23rd Festival Season.

The seven-week season opens Friday, July 7, 2017, with Christine Brewer as Lady Billows in Benjamin Britten’s “Albert Herring.”

The season will also feature Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” and Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel.”

Artistic director Scott Schoonover noted in a press release, “Our 2017 Festival Season promises to be among our best yet and is full of beautiful voices and theatrical surprises. I am particularly thrilled to have Christine Brewer back on our stage for a second summer, and to welcome Ken Page in his Union Avenue Opera debut as he leads our first-ever foray into the classic American musical Carousel.”

The Union Avenue Opera has grown in artistic quality and excellence and has presented a wide range of operas including “Madama Butterfly,” “Rigoletto,” “Tosca,” Jake Heggie’s “Dead Man Walking,” Andre Previn’s “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and “Doubt.”

“Albert Herring” runs through July 15 and the festival runs through August 26.
