CD/DVD Releases – Week of July 17: Elina Garanca, Krassimira Stoyanova & Klaus Florian Vogt Lead New Releases

By Francisco Salazar

Three high profile releases are coming out this week. The first comes from one of the biggest mezzo-sopranos in a role debut while the other comes from one of the most revered summer festivals while the third comes from Salzburg in a rare Strauss work. Both releases will come from the yellow label Deutsche Grammophon.

La Favorite

Elina Garanca has dominated the Bel Canto repertoire for years, singing numerous Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini roles throughout her career. However, this past season she took on the pinnacle of the mezzo Bel Canto repertoire making her stage role debut as Leonore in “La Favorite” at the Bayerische Staatsoper. For those who missed it and will not be able to go to Munich for the summer festival, Deutsche Grammophon will release a DVD of the run earlier last season. The opera also stars Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien and is conducted by Garanca’s husband Karel Mark Chichon.

Parsifal

Last year Deutsche Grammophon and the Bayreuth Festival announced a partnership to release one DVD from the festival a year. The partnership began last with Wagner’s “Tristan Und Isolde” and continues this year with “Parsifal.” The DVD stars Klaus Florian Vogt and Elena Pankratova. Hartmut Haenchen conducts the festival orchestra.

Die Liebe der Danae

This is one of those that most opera lovers have never heard of. But last season when the Salzburg Festival presented it, audiences were in for a real treat. Starring Krassimira Stoyanova and led by Franz Welser-Möst, this DVD by Euroarts captures one of last summer’s biggest musical highlights.
